Living and non-living things (Grade 4-term 1)

Living things:

Living things is something that is alive.

Look at the pictures and identify all the living things:

What makes these things living?

Are there only living things on the land?

Give two examples of the living things you can find in the sea.

Examples of living things in the sea:

Animals: Fish, sharks, jelly fish, star fish

Plants: Seagrass, algae and corals

Do you think bacteria and germs are living things?

Bacteria and germs are living things that belong to the group called micro-organisms which means some of these bacteria's and germs are so small that we need a microscope to see it.

Why do we use a microscope?

We use a microscope to enlarge an image by looking through a scope to see things that we won’t be able to see with our naked eyes.

Life processes of living plants and animals

Life processes definition is the important processes carried out by living organism( organism are plants, animals, bacteria and humans) in order to maintain and sustain life.

All living things have life processes that are similar. These life processes allow living things to feed, breathe, sense, grow, reproduce, excrete and move.

2- Growth

3- Reproduction

4-Breathing

5-Excreting

6-Sensitivity

7-Locomotion

7 life processes of living things

Feeding:

Animals need to eat food and drink water to help them live.

Plants make use of the light from the sun to make their own food, some plants also require water to live.

Growth

All living things grow.

Living things are born, then they get older(or mature) and then eventually die.

Let's think of a chicken. The mom chicken lays an egg, then keeps it warm until it hatches. The baby chick is born. The baby chick then grows into a chicken and when it is old the chicken eventually dies.

Reproduction

Living things survive and sustain themselves by increasing their numbers by creating more of the same kind of plant or animal.

Animals have babies such as cat having kittens.

Plants can produce young plants through their seeds, this is called reproduction.

Breathing

Animals breathe in gas called Oxygen and breathe out Carbon Dioxide.

Animals usually breathe by using their lungs but animals that live in the ocean use gills to breathe under water.

Plants take in Carbon Dioxide and releases oxygen into the air.

Excreting

Definition: The process of getting rid of waste from the body.

Example: when a dog has to go outside to do a number 1 or 2.

Living things can get rid of waste products from their bodies.

Animals get rid of waste products when they pass urine.

Plants get rid of waste materials when they drop their leaves.

Sensitivity

Definition: The ability to sense change in the environment.

Living things are sensitive which allows it to be aware of changes that occur in the environment.

Animals are sensitive and respond to stimuli for heat, light, sound, touch and taste.

Examples: humans can feel the change in temperature and is aware when it is hot or cold.

Plants are sensitive to the environment and respond to light by moving their leaves towards it. Some flowers open in the morning and close at the night when there’s no light.

locomotion:

Definition: Organisms that can move.

Loco-motion: Movement

Some living things can move from one place to another.

Plants cannot move from one place to another like animals can but they can move by growing towards the light.
